New StepSaver® System Makes Oil and Grease Extraction a Slick Process for Analysts

StepSaver - New and Improved

February 23, 2018, Vernon Hills, Ill.— The new StepSaver® Extraction System, from Environmental Express, streamlines the extraction process even further than its predecessor to help analysts work faster and safer. The compact, single-place station saves valuable benchtop space and time. Single stations can be daisy-chained together to run multiple samples at once for a faster sample throughput. The StepSaver System is ideal for analysts who want to work more efficiently by eliminating steps in the process while maintaining compliance with EPA Method 1664 for oil and grease.

The new StepSaver System is designed with durable PVC and plastic materials, making it completely glass-free and safer. Analysts no longer need to replace expensive glassware or clean up dangerous broken glass. Disposable filter funnels assembled with the extraction disk eliminate cross-contamination and make cleanup fast and easy. The StepSaver Extraction System provides flexibility with the choice of evaporation vessels: preweighed StableWeigh vessels, a pre-weighed aluminum weigh pan, or an original pre-weighed StepSaver flask.

New Environmental Express® HotBlock® 200 System Takes Metals Digestion Up a Notch

HotBlock 200

February 23, 2018, Vernon Hills, Ill.—Environmental Express turns up the heat on metals digestion with its new HotBlock 200 system. The redesigned system allows customers to perform metals digestion at higher temperatures—up to a maximum 200°C (392°F), which is above industry standards. It is ideal for use in laboratories that perform environmental testing.

The HotBlock 200 system is a redesign of the HotBlock Pro with new features, but keeps the same dependable graphite block and Kydex® housing as the company continues to use metals-free materials in its construction to avoid cross-contamination and provide high chemical resistance. These units are available from 25 to 96 wells and accept cup sizes of 15 mL, 50 mL, and 100 mL. Custom units are also available.

The HotBlock 200 system also features redesigned controllers. The easy-to-use external controllers feature automatic shut-off, alarms, and ability to save profiles with ramp and soak settings. The dual-block controller can control up to two heating blocks independently and simultaneously. They can be safely mounted to the outside of a fume hood or placed on a benchtop.

New Environmental Express® AutoBlock® Fill Automates Dangerous Process in Metals Digestion

AutoBlock Fill

September 14, 2017, Charleston, SC—The latest generation of the AutoBlock, from Environmental Express, safely and accurately automates the most dangerous step of sample prep for metals digestion—the addition of acids and reagents. The accessory fits any size HotBlock® digestion system to provide automation at an affordable price. The system is ideal for any laboratory performing their own unique metals digestion method.

The AutoBlock Fill dispenses from up to five reagent bottles at a time. A five-way valve eliminates the need to swap out reagent bottles when switching digestion methods, providing easy switching between reagents. Included software directs the AutoBlock Fill to dispense reagent as programmed by user. Reagent is dispensed via an integrated Masterflex® peristaltic pump accurate to ±2% volume and can be calibrated to any dispensing volume. The AutoBlock Fill can be controlled via the onboard touch screen or by directly connecting a computer with the included software.

The metals digestion process is extremely corrosive and the AutoBlock Fill unit fits inside of standard-sized fume hoods or the Environmental Express AirLite Benchtop Enclosure to provide the safest and cleanest environment to handle acidic fumes. The AutoBlock Fill is constructed from the same acid-resistant materials as the company’s HotBlock systems.

StableWeigh™ Vessels from Environmental Express Now Mentioned in Standard Methods

August, 24, 2017, Charleston, SC — StableWeigh™ vessels, from Environmental Express, are compliant with the requirements for evaporating dishes in ASTM D5907-13, listed in 40CFR part 136 for total solids (TS) and total dissolved solids (TDS). They are also mentioned by name in SM2540 2015 in the 23rd edition of Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater.

Standard Methods is the water and wastewater industry’s trusted source of accurate and proven methodology for analysis of natural water, water supplies and wastewater. It is published by the American Public Health Association, the American Water Works Association, and the Water Environment Federation.

“It is quite an accomplishment for us to have StableWeigh vessels mentioned in Standard Methods and speaks volumes about our ability to develop innovative products that move industries forward,” says Sean Patrick, General Manager, Environmental Express. “This is also a win for the water and wastewater industry. Now laboratories can rest assured they are in method compliance when they choose this revolutionary product that will save them a huge amount of time.”

Standard Methods is the water and wastewater industry’s trusted source of accurate and proven methodology for analysis of natural water, water supplies and wastewater. “The EPA’s approval of StableWeigh vessels for use as a Standard Method is quite an accomplishment for us and speaks volumes about our ability to develop innovative products that move industries forward,” says Sean Patrick, General Manager, Environmental Express. “This is also a win for the water and wastewater industry. StableWeigh vessels reduce time
spent preparing, weighing, cooling, and cleaning evaporation vessels. Each StableWeigh vessel is preweighed with the tare weight printed on it, so it’s ready to use right out of the box. The vessels are inert to common water and wastewater components, and heat resistant at the temperature required by the method. The vessels do not hold as much heat energy and will cool much faster. Because StableWeigh vessels weigh much less than a traditional glass or ceramic crucible, they give results with greater precision and accuracy. Combined, these factors reduce the number of drying and weighing cycles needed to obtain a constant weight. Once the analysis is complete, the StableWeigh vessels can be disposed of which eliminates the need for washing and the possibility of carryover contamination from one sample to the next.

“Green chemistry” kits provide safer, faster, and more accurate results

Charleston, S.C., June 20, 2016—Environmental Express is pleased to announce its partnership with NECi Superior Enzymes to bring enzyme-based nitrate testing supplies to the environmental testing market. Current nitrate testing methods typically use cadmium, a toxic heavy metal and known carcinogen. The new nitrate test kits use a naturally occurring enzyme called nitrate reductase. In addition to reducing chance exposure to cadmium to protect user safety, the enzymatic test method also provides more reliable and accurate testing than traditional methods. A proposed 2015 Method Update Rule (MUR) approved Method N07-003, a new method for nitrate, nitrite, and nitrate-nitrite analysis, as an Alternative Test Method (ATM) for the US EPA Clean Water Act. In addition, the nitrate reductase method has already been validated by ASTM (Method D7781) and USGS (Standard-Range Method I-2547-11 or Low Range Method I-2548-11). The new Method N07-003 uses automated discrete analysis, flow injection analysis, or manual reagent additions and spectrophotometry to determine concentrations of nitrate and nitrate in wastewater.
