Waterless Bead Baths Are Eco-Friendly Althernative

Lab Armor™ Beads are eco-friendly and low-maintenance metallic beads that replace water in existing water baths. They can also be used in aluminum blocks in dry baths and can replace ice in ice buckets. And Beads don't evaporate and they are recyclable!

Lab Armor Beads:
-Eliminate emptying, cleaning and refilling water baths
-Keep everything dry so don't attract harmful microbial growth
-Hold everything in place without racks and allow you to put different size vessels in one bath
-Don't require the use of non eco-friendly germicides

Question/Answer

How fast do they heat up, and is it uniform across the bath?

Both of these answers will depend entirely on the bath in which the beads are used. Generally speaking, the beads will heat at a slightly slower rate than water in a comparable setting. This is due to the thermal inertia of the solid beads. This is also what gives them a superior performance in retaining the heat once they are at temperature. The uniformity of the temperature will be dependent upon the heating element size and placement. A smaller central heating element will not give as uniform a temperature as would a larger element spread over the bottom of the chamber.

If I wanted to use these instead of ice in an ice bucket, how would I prep them, and how long would they stay at the temperature of ice (in an ice bucket) before I would have to re-prep them?

The beads would simply be placed in your freezer to cool to the desired temperature. It is recommended to keep the beads as dry as possible for optimal use. One you remove the beads it really depends on what type of ice bucket you use to store them in and how much insulation you have. We offer a Chill Bucket that you can place chill packs in to help keep the beads cold. Using the Chill Bucket and one chill pack you can keep the beads cold for up to 4 hours. Two chill packs extends the time to up to 8 hours.

How are beads used in an ice bucket? Are they placed in the freezer and how long should they stay under 5 deg. C?

Beads should be chilled in a refrigerator to 2 deg C. There are ice blocks that should be frozen and placed in the bottom of the ice bucket to help keep the beads cool. Following this protocol the beads can be kept to a temperature of 1 - 8 deg C for 4 hours using 1 ice block and up to 8+ hours with 2 ice blocks. What are the inner/outer dimensions of this product?

The interior dimensions of the tub are 12\" x 12\" x 6\" while the exterior dimensions are 8.5\" high, 15.9\" wide, and 18.5\" deep.

What size Lab Armor beads are needed in a water bath is 11 3/4 x 12 3/4

Most water baths operate properly when they are filled to 1/2 to 3/4 full. Baths with Lab Armor Beads are no exception and should follow the same guidlines.

can I get a sample of these?

This product is not available for sampling.

Are the beads single-use, or are they reusable? If they are reusable, at what point do they need to be replaced?

The beads are reusable and designed for multiple uses. They may be cleaned using soap, water, and 70% ethanol solution. Their lifespan will be dependent on user care.

I worry about heating elements in waterbaths over heating and even heating. Any comment?

Most waterbaths today can control temperature to within +/- 0.25 deg C or less. The heating devices used are controlled either by an analog controller or a microprocessor providing fast response and tight controls. Reciprocating waterbaths certainly help in even heating by moving the water constantly through the bath. The Lab Armor beads are made of aluminum and conduct heat in a very constant and consistent manner as well.

If I currenty have a 19.3 L compacity water bath does that mean I\'d need 19 liters of the Armor beads?

Most water baths operate properly when they are filled to 1/2 to 3/4 full. Baths with Lab Armor Beads are no exception and should follow the same guidlines. A 20L bath generally takes somewhere around 16L of Lab Armor Beads.
