Universal Solids Standard

Universal Solids Standard

Create inexpensive Lab Control Samples and Spike Samples for everyday use.  The Universal Solids Standard (USS) allows ongoing batch level QA/QC samples for solids tests at an affordable cost.  Create a Lab Control Sample (LCS) by transferring bottle contents into a graduated cylinder, pour to volume and analyze for any or all solids parameters. To create a Duplicate Spike, add bottle contents to sample and analyze.  An acceptability range of ±3 standard deviations is provided for each parameter.  MSDS and Certificate of Analysis with NIST traceability and instructions for use are included with each batch.

Question/Answer

Where can we find the CoA for this product? It doesn\'t appear under the space we expected to find it on your website.

If you do not have the original COA that came with the item you will need to contact the original vendor of this item, NSI solutions. Go to http://www.nsi-es.com/coa.aspx and select QCI-055 as the part number. Find your lot number and you will be able to download a PDF.

To what final volume are the USS standards diluted? Can they be used for volatile suspended solids testing?

The instructions for this product state to dilute the standards to 1000 mL. However, the volume can be adjusted to fit the laboratory’s needs. The true value would need to be adjusted with a multiplier of 1000 mL divided by the volume used. Note that this standard is intended to be used as a whole volume. It does not subsample very well.

What is the holding time for these standards? How long are they good after purchase?

The packaged standard does not have an expiration date on it. We send these standards as dry particles that are suspended in solution in the lab. Once put in solution they have a similar expiration date as a TSS sample, 7 days.

Is an updated MSDS for this product available? The one I have expires on Jan 17, 2014. The link above did not work.

The paperwork that comes with the standard is a combination certificate of analysis and MSDS. The expiration date listed is for the product that came with that paperwork. It does not apply to the MSDS itself.

Can this standard be used for VSS?

No - this standard only has certified values for TSS, TDS, and TS. We do offer a VSS standard which would be part # F95005, F95005H, or F95005UH.

How many mL of TSS standard can be prepared from each bottle? How long will this solution keep? Thanks!

The product is supplied as a dry powder that is made up to volume by the user. It is designed to be used with 1000 mL of reagent water. Following this procedure will give a concentration listed on the sample containers. Depending on the desired results the product can be added to more or less reagent water, with the final concentration being adjusted by the same factor. The product itself has an expiration date printed on the label. Once put into solution, the standard should have the same holding time as required by your TSS method and regulations.
